Synopsis:
Road Sage is a dramatic TV series depicting the experiences and encounters of a mysterious man, known only as “Mule”, as he wanders throughout the West in search of redemption. Each episode will be the stand-alone story of his experiences in each town he visits – the people he meets, the stories that he becomes entangled in, and the trials and tribulations of living with two mules. Road Sage is the story of a man who loses his way in life. His seemingly successful life implodes in the blink of an eye. His only thought is to flee – avoid facing the horror of the unspeakable transgression he feels that he is responsible for. He decides to escape into the wilderness – to leave his identity and former life behind and see if he can rediscover what makes life important – to return to the Natural World – life without the Noise of Civilization.
Above all he seeks redemption, staying on the fringes of society so as not to attract attention and because he feels most comfortable with fellow outcasts.
Accompanied by two pack mules, he searches for an answer he doesn’t know where to find or if it even exists. His mules soon become the most important part of his life – his confidants. They are also the cause many humorous incidents as he travels through towns and cities. His cloak of anonymity and cryptic comments draw people to him. He is an enigma – a walking anachronism. However, his budding celebrity soon becomes toxic. While on his odyssey, he maintains contact with his family and company through a former work colleague, Peter. In the pilot episode, we learn that he was a lead scientist for a BioTech firm in Seattle that was working on developing cutting-edge AIDS treatment therapies. Several patients die during a Phase 3 clinical trial. This awakens painful memories from his childhood of his Mother’s death and triggers overwhelming feelings of guilt and failure. He is beset with the constant feeling that people are pursuing him.
He becomes entwined in the lives of people who, like him, are in crisis. Gradually, he discovers a purpose in life. He reconnects with the youthful idealism that originally led him to a life in medicine. He eventually realizes that he cannot find redemption searching out in the world. He can only find it within – by confronting himself. There is no atonement – only understanding, acceptance and love. He discovers that searching is as important as achieving your goal. He learns the power of stillness and quiet. Interspersed throughout his travels are transcendent visions of nature which he quietly observes in sublime reverence. His journey becomes a lens through which we see the plight of the millions of homeless in our country who have fallen through the cracks in our society and who have given up hope.
